Telehealth services are becoming increasingly common during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth allows patients to receive a consultation with a doctor or practitioner virtually. While this helps limit the number of patients in a doctor’s office or a hospital, any data transferred over the internet runs the risk of being intercepted by hackers. Some Telehealth services may not meet HIPAA requirements and lack proper safeguards. Here are some tips to receive healthcare and stay cyber safe:

1. Two-factor Authentication

Before signing into your Telehealth platform, ensure that two-factor authentication is enabled. Using two steps to log in has been proven effective in blocking cyber attacks.

2. Enroll in a VPN

VPNs mask your IP addresses which make your online actions harder to trace. This will minimize the chances of your information from being intercepted by a hacker.

3. Talk to your healthcare provider

When you meet with your provider virtually ask them if they are in a space where your information will not be overheard. You can even ask them to wear headphones to ensure your privacy is protected.
