Hi there, My name is Rainee Favela, and today’s blog will be a reflection of my experience while working for NAU ITS. I will recall the details of my position through 3 sections.
Introduction:
I currently work as a Communications Assistant where I have an Emphasis in Graphics. I was remotely hired in February 2021, the second semester of my Freshman year. When I originally started my position the team consisted of 4 women, to include myself, which was extremely empowering. As I approached each work day I started to feel more comfortable with interacting with my remote work environment due to the positive and open communication shared with my teammates through video calls.
Before working for the ITS department I was not aware of the true extent of their positive impact on students until it affected me. I was provided with resources like an Imac, mouse, keyboard, Adobe subscription, and much more! The ITS department made sure that all of their employees were properly supplied. To say the least I felt like my presence was valued through the instant bonding with the team and provision of tools from the department.
My Role/Projects:
As a Freshman the team was unsure of the extent of my experience and my approach with graphics. I equally was unsure of their branding procedures and expectations. I was given the task of “Motivational Mondays”. At first I had the impression that only illustrative graphics were desired, but over time through communication I was able to discover the style flexibility allowed for this specific assignment. By week 2 and 3 I was able to establish the appropriate procedures with dimensions, quotations, and professional yet unique designs.
I expressed my confidence in visual tasks with my Supervisor, Arianne Yago, to which she happily embraced. Next thing I knew, I was assigned pages for the NAU ITS Annual Report for 2020–2021. After attending my meetings I realized how rewarding this project was, as it was directly connected with the head of our department and the president of NAU. I was grateful for the trust my team had put into me to already assign elements of the project to me.
As the Spring 2021 semester ended, I was able to approach and create new projects for the NAU ITS social platforms, while also taking over graphics and verbiage for the Blogs and NAU ITS External Newsletter. My work was always provided with valuable feedback and the editing process was respected with patience.
Conclusion:
I am currently at a point where I acknowledge that I am still developing but contribute most of my growth to my time at work. If anything I was able to practice the skills I was taught in my Visual Communications classes and I was exposed to new situations outside of the classroom that pushed me to further teach myself. Working with my team at NAU ITS not only provided me with new opportunities but inspired the pursuit of new passions. I always loved reaching out to others, collaborating in teams, working with agencies, and my team helped me categorize those passions underneath the topic of Public Relations. As I approach the start of my Sophomore year I am excited for the new responsibilities I will be trained to transition towards and what experiences may come with the progression of my time at NAU ITS.
