College students move miles away from home. Nights out are limited due to COVID but here are some free apps that we recommend for any outing, even the grocery store (especially if you live alone).

1. NAU Safe

  • The NAU Safe app is the official safety app of Northern Arizona University. The app features notifications and alerts, tools for responding to an emergency, tips for staying safe on campus, and other enhanced features.

2. Circle 6

  • This app allows for users to pick 6 people they want in their circle. Any time that the user needs to be picked up or wants the trusted 6 to call they can send a push notification. There’s also a danger button to teach hotlines for victims of sexual or domestic abuse.

3. Life 360

  • This app allows you to share your location with family and friends. The app also has an “SOS” feature that allows you to send a notification to everyone with whom you share your location with that you’re in danger.

4. Scream Alarm

  • This app has one button and the phone screams loudly in a woman’s voice. This is especially useful when you are possibly walking alone.

5. Kitestring

  • This isn’t an app, but it’s a text-message service that checks up on you when you leave your house. If you don’t check in with Kitestring it sends a personalized altet message to your listed emergency contact. This can be very convenient when meeting new people or going on blind dates.
